Please read this important posting from the old Trans Housing Network from years ago regarding “chasers” of trans people and their occasional attempts to use sites like this inappropriately.
***Posting Tips for Looking for Housing***
-Submit a post with limited details about you or your body, just your first name you go by, how you identify, nearest large city or just the state you are coming from. Where you are looking to get to like the city or area or state (i.e. Bay Area, West Coast, Pacific Northwest, Northeast, California, Colorado, Illinois, etc.
-Contact email that you check regularly (no social media like: Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram or websites) no phone, just an email that you check. Anything else you want the reader to know about you like pets, scents, cleanliness, etc.
By submitting a Housing Needed post you are agreeing to the Terms and Conditions listed clearly and prominently on the About page. Make sure you read them. It is for your and the site's protection.
Safety Tips:
-Speak on the phone and/or by video with a potential host after connecting by email. What's the neighborhood like? Access to public transportation? Ask all the questions you can think of and write them out beforehand to make sure you're covering everything.
-Examine the social media, including LinkedIn, for a potential host.
-You may want to look up your host's political giving as if they donate to anti-trans politicians you may want to pass on staying with them. The FEC Individual Contributions is a good lookup site.
-Always do a basic Google search and review several pages of returns to see if they're posting troubling stuff in chat rooms, websites, etc.
-Don’t post your address or directions to your home.
-Don't post your age.
-Don't post your phone. Make contact on your terms when you want to through email first.
-Don’t post information about your body or interests that sexual predators may use to target you, this includes age and any information about your transition status.
-Ask for personal references or roommate references.
-Do not incriminate yourself in a correspondence with a stranger on the internet.
-When meeting someone from the internet, it is a great idea to tell a friend that you are doing this and what your intended whereabouts will be.
-Check in with said friend from time to time and inform them that you are safe as soon as you are able. Give that trusted friend the host's email and other contact info along with the email thread that you used to arrange the housing.
-When you meet for the first time, meet in a public place if you are able to like get coffee or lunch when you get to town, etc.
Sexual predators, your attempts to post on the site get referred to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children CyberTipline and stored as evidence and then rejected from this site.
People looking for housing in discussion with potential hosts can look up past sex offenders in their area at the FBI Sex Offender Registry Website.
Your submission for a post cannot be edited to remove social media or a phone number or anything like your age (to help avoid predators), so it will have to be rejected.
